After receiving criticism for performing at his initial venue, Dave Chappelle has changed locations for his Minneapolis event.
Hours prior to Chappelle's scheduled performance on Wednesday night at First Avenue, the venue announced on Instagram that Chappelle would move his performance to the Varsity Theater.
The theatre issued a statement saying, "To workers, artists, and our community, we hear you and we are sorry. We acknowledged that we had to hold ourselves to the greatest standard
The theatre stated, "We believe in the freedom of artistic expression and varied voices, but in recognising that, we lost sight of the impact this would have.
Following the October release of his controversial Netflix special "The Closer", in which he made several jokes labeled transphobic by LGBTQ advocates,
LGBTQ advocates are considered transphobic. Netflix employees also held a walkout to protest the special and Netflix's handling of the reaction.
When the programme got two Primetime Emmy nominations on Tuesday, social media users expressed their outrage at the choice to further recognise the event.
It's amusing that First Avenue has a comprehensive code of conduct that expressly mentions transphobia on their website but they still decided to book Dave Chappelle in the first place.
